LED lights and their effect on the environment

Concern for our environment is important to many Americans, and many people feel a desire to do what they can to protect our planet.  Technology has responded to this and every year we are seeing advances in LED lighting making it more efficient, longer lasting, and more environmentally friendly. By transitioning away from traditional High Pressure Sodium, or Metal Halide lights an individual or business can enjoy all the benefits of LED lighting, as well as save the environment.

To start LED lights often last 20 times longer than traditional lighting options. This benefits the consumer in not having to purchase and install new lights as often, however this carries its weight all the way through a product's life. Companies do not need to manufacture as many lights to meet a much higher demand due to bulbs constantly wearing out. This translates to less costs to package and ship the bulbs to your local stores. A longer life span and less maintenance are great, but eventually every bulb is going to wear out and be replaced. By lasting longer than traditional lights LED lights end up taking up less space in landfills compared to traditional lights which would be discarded and replaced far more often. LED lights also do not contain any mercury which could seep into the ground after disposal. Therefore at every step in it’s life, an LED bulb is helping to protect the environment.

Perhaps most importantly, LED lights consume much less energy than incandescent, and high-intensity discharge (HID) lights. LED lights generally use only 2-17 watts, which is a savings of 25-80% over standard lighting solutions.   Fluorescent lights are often cited as being energy efficient, but ultimately they were a stepping stone on our way to LED lighting which is even more energy efficient. LED lights also generate significantly less heat that traditional lights. Beyond just simple energy efficiency LED lights allow you to better direct the light from the source to the target area, whereas fluorescent lights can be harder to focus. This leaves you paying to generate light that is effectively wasted.

As noted by the U.S. Department of Energy “Widespread use of LED lighting has the greatest potential impact on energy savings in the United States. By 2027, widespread use of LEDs could save about 348 terawatt hours (compared to no LED use) of electricity: This is the equivalent annual electrical output of 44 large electric power plants (1000 megawatts each), and a total savings of more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices.”
